Every cemetery and crematorium has stories to tell – of people and whānau, local history, communities and the places that connect us with the past.
This Aotearoa Cemeteries & Crematoria Week, we’re inviting people across the motu to discover those stories and see these familiar places in a new way.
Cemeteries and crematoria are places of remembrance, connection and belonging. They give whānau and communities places to remember loved ones and reflect, but they can also be places to walk, learn, connect with nature and discover the people and events that have shaped our communities.
The week is also an opportunity to recognise the people who care for these important places and support whānau at significant moments in their lives.
Get involved
Councils, cemetery and crematorium operators, community groups and others around Aotearoa are encouraged to make the week their own.
You might share the story of a person, place or memorial; highlight local history; introduce the people who care for your cemetery or crematorium; invite your community to visit; or promote an existing tour, walk, open day, talk or activity.
You don’t need to create something new to take part. Aotearoa Cemeteries & Crematoria Week is an opportunity to shine a light on the stories, people and places already in your community.
Every place holds a story. What stories could you help your community discover?
