We are the national organisation that represents the collective strength of the cemeteries and crematoria sector in Aotearoa.
Our members include councils, trusts, iwi, community partners, and industry stakeholders working as kaitiaki of these important spaces.
We provide our members with information, support, training and opportunities to connect and share knowledge. As the collective voice of the sector, we advocate for policies and practices that reflect the values of our industry.

Whakapapa
NZCCC Ngā Rau Hotu was set up in November 2012 with the support of Recreation Aotearoa.

Vision
To become the leading support and advisory group in Aotearoa for New Zealand’s cemeteries and crematoria sector.

Purpose
To support Aotearoa New Zealand’s cemeteries and crematoria sector in providing spaces that honour the past, nurture the present, and inspire connections for the future.

Ngā Rau Hotu
In 2024, we were gifted the reo name, ‘Ngā Rau Hotu’, after working with Kuruho Wereta.
The name ‘Ngā Rau Hotu’ is rooted in Māori culture and philosophy. It encapsulates the essence of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence.
Its literal translation is as follows:
- Ngā Rau: This phrase refers to ‘many leaves’, hundreds, many people, symbolising abundance, growth and renewal. Here, it alludes to those who have passed and are remembered.
- Hotu: This word conveys a profound sense of sadness, grief and loss. It speaks to the emotional depth of the human experience, and the importance of acknowledging and honouring those who have departed.
By combining these elements, Ngā Rau Hotu becomes an expression of the complex emotions associated with death and mourning.
