In 2024, we were gifted a reo name Ngā Rau Hotu, after working with Kuruho Wereta of Recreation Aotearoa.
The name ‘Ngā Rau Hotu’ is rooted in Māori culture and philosophy. It encapsulates the essence of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence.
Its literal translation can be found below:
- Ngā Rau: This phrase refers to ‘many leaves’, hundreds, many people, symbolising abundance, growth and renewal. Here, it alludes to those who have passed and are remembered.
- Hotu: This word conveys a profound sense of sadness, grief and loss. It speaks to the emotional depth of the human experience, and the importance of acknowledging and honouring those who have departed.
By combining these elements, Ngā Rau Hotu becomes an expression of the complex emotions associated with death and mourning.
Going forward, Ngā Rau Hotu will sit alongside the acronym of New Zealand Cemeteries and Crematoria on our logo, documentation and website, as: NZCCC Ngā Rau Hotu.
